Grade 2 Community News

Dear Grade 2 families,
Our students have shown fantastic effort and dedication throughout this term, and we are very proud of the progress they have made. As the year has continued, they have grown in confidence with classroom routines and are becoming more independent in their learning.
Literacy
This week in Literacy, students have been learning the new “-ing” suffix spelling rule and practicing previously taught spelling rules throughout the week. They have enjoyed applying these rules during their reading and writing activities.
In Reading, students have continued developing their comprehension strategies with a focus on visualising. They have been learning how to create a picture in their minds while reading. Students have been thinking carefully about the five senses — what they can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel in the text to help them. This has helped students build a deeper understanding of what they are reading and make stronger connections to the stories. They have been making great progress!
Maths
In Maths this term, our students are continuing to build and strengthen their understanding of numbers. They are beginning to explore how to measure half, a quarter, and one-eighth of an original length using practical materials. This is a challenging concept, and the children are working very hard to develop their understanding. This week, the children have also been focusing on improving their ability to understand and solve word problems, including recognising how two parts can be combined to make a whole. Keep up the good work, Grade 2!
Humanities
In Humanities, students have been learning about Australia, including compass points and the different states and territories in relation to where we live. Students have explored the position of each state and territory and practiced accurately labeling them on a map of Australia. They have been learning to identify Australian places as urban, rural, or remote, and discuss how people’s lives may be different in these areas. Students have been asking great questions to deepen their understanding!
Reminders
- Please ensure you are reading with your child every night. Students can borrow take-home books from their classroom libraries on their designated library days.
- We encourage families to work together to get students to school on time. Classes start the day with morning circle time, and we would love all students to be at school by 8:45 am so they don’t miss out.
- Continue using Numbots, Times Table Rock Stars, and Aussie Decodables at home. Logins were provided at Meet and Greet—please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you need a copy of their login details.
- Please check Compass for more details on upcoming events and excursions.
- Please keep your child at home if they are displaying any flu-like symptoms.
