Grade 6 Community News

Dear Grade 6 Families,
We have made it to week 6! This term is going by so fast! The Grade 6 team has been so impressed with the way students have continued to grow in confidence, independence, and teamwork throughout the term.
The students had a lot of fun dressing up as their favourite teacher for our first graduation fundraiser! We loved seeing the creativity!
English
Students are now halfway through reading The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett. So far, they have explored the experiences of Lieutenant Shepard and the kindness shown by Coco and Marcelle as they help him on his journey home. Students have been discussing important themes such as courage, compassion, honesty, and the effects of war, while also examining the symbolic meaning of the silver donkey stories shared throughout the novel.
In class, students have participated in comprehension activities, character analysis, vocabulary work, and reflective discussions to deepen their understanding of the text. We look forward to seeing how students respond to the remaining chapters and the novel’s powerful message about hope and humanity.
In Writing, we have been focusing on fables. Last week, we worked on planning and writing a problem, resolution, and conclusion for their fables. Next, they will be editing their fable for punctuation, sentence structure, and vocabulary. They will also present their fable to an audience using knowledge of key aspects when reading aloud. Spelling Through Morphographs
This term, students have been developing their spelling skills through the study of morphographs — the meaningful parts of words, such as prefixes, suffixes, and base words. By learning how words are built, students are improving their understanding of spelling patterns, vocabulary, and word meanings.
Through engaging word study activities, students have explored how adding prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning and function of words. This approach supports students in becoming more confident readers and writers, while also helping them recognise unfamiliar words across different learning areas.
Students are encouraged to continue noticing and discussing word parts during reading and everyday conversations to strengthen their understanding of language and spelling.
Maths
Over the next two weeks in Mathematics, students will be exploring probability and chance. They will build on their understanding of events ranging from “impossible” to “certain” by using numerical probability scales from 0 to 1 and from 0% to 100%. Students will also strengthen their understanding of the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages as they apply these concepts to probability.
Through hands-on experiments and investigations, students will record outcomes, estimate probabilities, and compare experimental results with theoretical expectations. They will explore how the number of trials can affect the accuracy of results and use real-world examples, such as weather forecasts and everyday probability language, to make meaningful connections to their learning.
Humanities
Over the coming weeks in Humanities, students will be exploring democracy and the Australian voting system through a hands-on mock election. Students will learn how citizens elect representatives, why voting is important in a democracy, and how preferential voting works to ensure fair outcomes.
Throughout the unit, students will take part in campaigning, voting, and vote-counting activities that mirror a real federal election. They will also explore the values of fairness, representation, inclusion, and respectful debate, while developing an understanding of the responsibilities, citizens have in shaping our democracy.
