Dear Grade 1 Families,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the term so far.

InitiaLit: Students have been learning about adjectives and understanding that “an adjective describes a noun.” They have been practicing identifying adjectives and using them in sentences to add more detail and make their writing more interesting and descriptive. We have also learned a new digraph, ‘ue’, which makes the ‘oo’ sound in words such as “glue” and “blue”.

InitiaLit - Tricky Words- sister, cousin, family

How you can support at home:

  • Read for a few minutes each night and ask your child to spot words with our focus sounds
  • Practice tricky words by writing them on paper, saying them aloud, or using them in a sentence.
  • Find verbs and homophones you find in your books while reading and write them down.

Storybook & Vocabulary

We are reading the text Bears Don’t Read!

Bears Don't Read! is a heartwarming story about a bear named George who feels different from the other bears. One day, he finds a book in the forest and becomes determined to learn how to read. When he travels into town to find help, people are frightened of him at first, but a kind girl named Clementine befriends him and teaches him to read. The story celebrates friendship, determination, and the joy of reading.

We have been focusing on the 3 vocabulary words: strolling, gazed and peculiar.

Writing

In Writing, students have been learning about how they can use their plans to draft the beginning, middle, and end of their narratives.

How you can support at home: You can support your child at home by encouraging them to talk about and plan simple stories before writing. Help them think about the beginning, middle, and end of a narrative, and encourage them to include descriptive words and interesting details. Listening to your child read their writing aloud and discussing their ideas can also help build their confidence and storytelling skills.

Maths

In Maths, students have been learning how to determine the missing part in number bonds. They have been using their understanding of part-part-whole relationships to identify missing numbers and solve addition and subtraction problems.

How you can support at home: You can support your child at home by practicing simple number bond activities in everyday situations. Encourage them to work out missing numbers using objects, fingers, or drawings. For example, “If there are 10 altogether and 6 are here, how many are missing?” Playing number games, using counters, or practicing quick mental maths can also help strengthen their understanding of part-part-whole relationships.

Humanities

In Humanities, students are learning about the idea that every family is different and that every family belongs. They are exploring the many different types of families and developing an understanding that all families are unique, valued, and important. Students are learning to appreciate diversity and recognise the importance of belonging, inclusion, and respect for others.

Reminders

  • Hats are not compulsory for Terms 2 and 3, but students may still wear them if they wish.
  • Please label uniform items with your child’s name clearly. The weather is getting colder, so we are expecting more students to bring jackets and beanies to wear during outside play.
  • Please continue to read every night and ensure your child swaps their take-home readers on their allocated day.
  • Please check Compass for information on the upcoming Grade 1 Incursion (The Superhero in You). Consent and payment ($14) is due on 04/06/2026. During this experience, students will get to explore what a superhero is, what they do, and why people like them.
