Performing Arts News

Hi Tarneit Rise families,
Welcome to our Performing Arts fortnightly update for Weeks 5 and 6 of Term 2. Students across the school have continued to develop their musical skills through singing, instrumental performance, composition, and collaboration. It has been wonderful to see students demonstrating increasing confidence as they rehearse, perform, and create music using a variety of instruments.
Our Prep students continued exploring music through singing, body percussion, and instrumental accompaniment. In Week 5, students practiced singing the “Flower Song” while using body percussion to maintain the steady beat and duration of the music. They also added untuned percussion instruments to accompany the song, helping them understand how instruments can enhance a performance. In Week 6, students proudly performed the “Flower Song” for their classmates, first with actions and then with percussion instruments, demonstrating growing confidence in singing and performing.
Grade 1 students proudly performed Hot Cross Buns on the glockenspiel in Week 5, demonstrating their developing skills in pitch, rhythm, and mallet technique. Some students were extended and challenged themselves by also performing Baby Shark for the class. In Week 6, students began composing their own songs in small groups using at least one glockenspiel and two different untuned percussion instruments. They worked collaboratively to combine melody, rhythm, and layered sounds to create original musical pieces.
Grade 2 students showcased their growing glockenspiel skills by performing Mary Had a Little Lamb in Week 5. Several students were extended and confidently performed Old MacDonald Had a Farm as an additional challenge. In Week 6, students also began composing original songs in small groups using at least one glockenspiel and two untuned percussion instruments. They explored how to organise rhythm and melody to create engaging and well-structured musical pieces.
Grade 3 students continued rehearsing When the Saints Go Marching In on the keyboard, with a strong focus on correct finger technique, pitch accuracy, and note duration. In Week 6, they performed the piece in small groups for their classmates, demonstrating improved coordination, confidence, and expressive performance skills.
Grade 4 students continued rehearsing Count on Me across both Weeks 5 and 6. They focused on mastering the verse before learning the pre-chorus and chorus, while paying close attention to correct finger positioning, playing technique, and musical elements such as pitch, duration, and dynamics. Students have shown excellent persistence as they work towards performing increasingly complex sections of the song.
Grade 5 students extended their group compositions by adding a ukulele part to the percussion arrangements they had previously created. In Week 5, students explored how the ukulele could complement their rhythmic ideas, and in Week 6, they continued refining their compositions with a focus on coordinating the ukulele with their percussion parts. This work has encouraged creativity, teamwork, and thoughtful decision-making about texture and accompaniment.
Grade 6 students undertook a more advanced version of this composition task, integrating ukulele and percussion parts with increasing independence and sophistication. In Week 5, they began adding ukulele accompaniment to their group compositions, considering chord changes and rhythmic accuracy. In Week 6, students refined their arrangements by balancing instrumental parts, improving ensemble coordination, and making deliberate choices about texture, tone, and musical structure to create polished and expressive performances.
