Visual Arts News

Hello parents and carers,
Time is flying, and we are already moving through Term 2! Our young artists have had an incredibly productive week in the art room, getting their hands messy with clay, paint, oil pastels, and construction materials. We also had an absolute blast on Friday for "Dress Up as Your Favourite Teacher" Day! The creativity was off the charts. A massive shout-out to the legends who dressed up as members of the Art Department—please see some photo highlights and student art updates below.
Prep
This week, our Prep students stepped into the world of sculpture! We explored the difference between flat, 2D artworks and 3D shapes. Students put their hands to work learning how to manipulate paper—bending, rolling, cutting, and folding it to create amazing, freestanding paper structures. Bobby-Ray, Bella, and Jannat (PI)
Grade 1
Our Grade 1 students have been fully immersed in clay-making, creating pinch-pot fish pots. They learned how to score, form slips, and blend the clay.
Grade 2
Our Grade 1 students have been fully immersed in clay-making, creating small-scale fairy doors. They learned how to score, form slips, and blend the clay, adding fine detail to create texture with a range of clay tools.
Grade 3
Things got wonderfully tactile and hands-on for Grade 3 this week as we jumped into clay! Students learned the classic pinch pot method to begin shaping the hollow bodies of their owls or chosen bird. They also practiced the crucial technique of scoring and slipping to secure details. They then painted their birds, focusing on mixing a range of tones using a fine brush to add varied detail and texture.
Grade 4
Our Grade 4 classes sketched their favourite foods, then developed their understanding of form by creating small-scale versions of the food using modeling clay and fine tools to represent the contrasting textures of their chosen foods. They will develop this project further by creating drawn shop fronts to form a performative installation piece.
Grade 5
The Grade 5 children created Yayoi Kusama-inspired mini models using magi-clay. They were focused on drafting their sketches and then shaping their freestanding forms. To further develop their projects, they will be molding dots of contrasting colors to decorate and creating a base with the same colors and spot patterns.
Grade 6
Our oldest artists are embarking on an exciting, multi-week sculpture project: creating custom vases! This week was all about preparation and structural engineering. Students drew up their blueprints and began constructing an armature—a sturdy internal framework—using balloons, cups, and tape to support paper mâché next week.
