Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!

Thank you to those who attended the Open Afternoon on Friday, 22nd May! It was a huge success with pupils showcasing their innovative products and services from our Economics Unit. Don’t worry if you weren’t able to make it, as there will be another Open Hour later on in the year. Also, we loved seeing our pupils dress up as us on Dress as your Teacher day!

English

In English, pupils have started reading Sonya Hartnett’s Silver Donkey. This historical narrative is filled with social, historical, and cultural context clues that we have been delving into as part of our discussions. The students have been utilising key vocabulary from the book as well as conjunctions to extend their reasoning. The novel also contains fables, and in our lessons we have been unpacking their features, structure, and purpose. We used well-known fables such as The Lion and the Mouse and The Tortoise and the Hare as examples, which will undoubtedly help us in the coming weeks as we begin planning our own fable. I cannot wait to see which morals our students will use as the basis for their fables!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, pupils have moved on to their first decimals topic of the year. Pupils have learned the relationship between decimals and fractions and have been working with numbers up to 3 decimal places - the thousandths of whole numbers. Visuals like number lines and decimats have been used to strengthen pupils’ knowledge of this topic. Understanding chance outcomes in our Probability unit has been more recent, and pupils will be able to conduct their own chance experiments with others next week. Again, we cannot stress how important it is to continue practicing times table facts at home! This doesn’t need to be lengthy periods of time - they could be practiced in car journeys, at the dinner table, or just before bedtime. Whenever it suits you!

Reminders

  • iPads are charged for school every day
  • As we head into winter weather, please send students prepared with appropriate jumpers, cardigans, and coats.
  • Please be sure to check the details on Compass for our Term 3 excursion to Sovereign Hill. There is still plenty of time left to pay for it (the last day of this term is the deadline). We would love for all of our pupils to make it, so please get in contact with the school if you need support.
