Defence School Mentor News

Welcome back to another wonderful year at Francis Greenway, and a special welcome to those who have newly joined the school!

Last year Defence Group ended on a high, with an educational tunnel tour at Fort Scratchley. The students explored the site’s fascinating history, and learned about its important role in Australia’s coastal defence. Throughout the excursion students represented the school with pride, showing respect to staff, guides, and members of the public, and should be commended for the positive way they conducted themselves during the visit.

This year, Defence Group will run on B week Thursdays at lunchtime. These relaxed sessions give students the chance to enjoy a drink or treat while socialising, playing games or completing activities together. They support students’ social and emotional wellbeing, and help build positive connections with other Defence students.

In our first get-together of the year we enjoyed soft drink floats, while getting to know the new faces in our group. We’ve also ‘brought a friend’ along for ice cream, and played Uno. Next week, we’ll have our first trivia competition for the year – the theme for this term is ‘Gaming’ which is sure to be hotly contested!

As the term progresses, I will be holding individual check-in chats with each Defence student. These one-on-one sessions provide an opportunity to cultivate positive relationships, set goals for the year, and work together to build resilience.

The Defence School Mentor Program supports the wellbeing of children of ADF members. The program connects students with their school community and enhances the schools ability to address the impacts of the military lifestyle. If you are a Defence family and your child is not currently included in our Defence group, please notify myself or the school.
