HSIE Faculty

"Study the past if you would define the future" - Confucius

As we begin an exciting new school year, the HSIE Faculty is looking forward to inspiring curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world around us. From exploring ancient civilisations to examining contemporary global challenges, our courses equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to become informed, active citizens.

Year 7 Geography

Landforms and Landscapes – Students investigate the natural features of our planet and learn how landforms are created and managed. Year 7 have already explored how tectonic plates move using Oreos for a fun and hands on learning experience.

Water in the World – Students explore the water cycle, global water distribution and the importance of sustainable water management.

 

Place and Liveability – Students examine what makes places liveable and compare communities around the world.

 

Interconnections – Students discover how people and places are connected through trade, transport, technology and culture.

The Year 7 assessment task is due in Week 7. 

Year 8 History

Investigating the Ancient Past – Students learn how historians and archaeologists uncover and interpret evidence from the past. Cookies make a reappearance in year 8 but this time to help us understand the process of archaeology and managing a dig.

Ancient Egypt – Students explore the achievements, beliefs and daily life of one of the world’s most influential civilisations.

 

Ancient China – Students examine dynasties, inventions and belief systems that continue to shape the modern world.

 

Medieval Europe – Students investigate feudalism, the Black Death and daily life during the Middle Ages.

 

Polynesian Expansion across the Pacific – Students study navigation, migration and cultural identity across the Pacific region – some of our nation’s closest neighbours.

 

Spanish Conquest of the Americas – Students analyse the impact of European exploration and conquest on Indigenous civilisations.

Year 9 Geography

Changing Places – Students analyse the causes and effects of how our countries and cities grow.

 

Sustainable Biomes – Students investigate ecosystems and the challenges of sustaining food production.

 

Environmental Change and Management – Students explore environmental challenges and sustainable management strategies specific to our local region.

 

Human Wellbeing – Students examine global inequalities and strategies to improve quality of life.

Year 10 History

Movement of People – Students investigate historical migration patterns and their impact on modern society.

 

Making a Nation – Students study Federation and the development of Australia’s political and social systems.

Australians at War – Students examine Australia’s involvement in global conflicts and their impacts.

 

Rights and Freedoms – Students explore movements for equality and the role of activism in social change with a specific focus on our First Nation Peoples.

 

Popular Culture – Students analyse how music, film, fashion and sport reflect and influence society.

Senior HSIE Courses

Our Stage 6 courses include Ancient History, Modern History, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Society and Culture, and VET courses such as Retail Services, Business Services and Work Studies. These subjects build critical thinking, research, communication and workplace skills to prepare students for university, training and employment pathways.

 

The year ahead promises rich discussions, engaging learning experiences and opportunities for our students to connect deeply with the world -past and present.
