Well 2026 sure has started off with a bang! This year sees the beginning of the new syllabuses being rolled out here at FGHS. Year 7 and Year 9 are being implemented this year, with 8 and 10 in 2027. We are looking forward to teaching these revamped courses and hope your students will find them both enjoyable and informative.
Year 7 have been beginning their high school Science education by learning how to safely light the Bunsen burner. Each student is observed by their teacher safely lighting a match and igniting the Bunsen flame. Once completed, each student receives their own signed Bunsen licence, which allows them to independently light Bunsens during future practicals.

Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science recently completed the field trip component of their Depth Study on Hazards. For this, they ventured down to Swansea to observe and measure features of a petrified forest. On the rock platform below the signal station, there are the remains of a forest that was wiped out by a volcanic eruption approximately 250 million years ago! Students were able to see the remnants of tree stumps and tree trunks preserved in tuff, a very hard rock produced from volcanic ash. Fortunately, it wasn’t too hot and the students seemed to enjoy the day by the beach learning about the effects of volcanic activity on a forest.

Assessment tasks for most years will be commencing shortly, and some have already been handed out. Students are reminded to follow their Assessment Schedules and ask their teacher if they are unsure of timelines. For Senior students, further assistance is available in the HSC Hub.
Until next time!
