HPGE

‘The High Potential and Gifted Education Policy promotes engagement and challenge for every student, regardless of background, in every school across intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.’

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) at Francis Greenway High School

At Francis Greenway High School, we are proud to offer a diverse and enriching range of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities. Our programs are designed to nurture students’ strengths across the four domains — Creative, Physical, Social-Emotional and Intellectual — ensuring every student has the opportunity to shine.

We encourage parents and carers to explore the many opportunities available and reach out if your child would like to get involved.

Creative Opportunities

Our Creative domain programs allow students to express themselves, refine their talents and collaborate with like-minded peers.

Students can participate in Art Club, Drama Ensemble, Dance Team and Sewing Club, each offering hands-on experiences that build confidence, creativity and technical skill.

We proudly participate in Star Struck, the NSW Department of Education’s annual performing arts spectacular, with students involved in Drama, Dance and Rock Band Ensemble.

Our talented musicians also compete in Bandwidth, showcasing their skills against other state school rock bands.

Aspiring writers can enter our Creative Writing Competition, while visual artists can take part in Art Matters, a specialised program held at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, where selected students experiment with advanced techniques under expert guidance.

Students also exhibit their work in the annual Youth Week Art Showcase, sharing their creative talents with the wider community.

Our much-loved monthly lunchtime music performances provide another platform for HPGE musicians to share their talents with the school community.

Physical Domain

Our Talented Sports Programs identify and support students who demonstrate exceptional physical potential. Led by experienced facilitators, these programs provide clear development pathways, opportunities for state representation, and access to representative sport pathways. Students are also encouraged to showcase their skills through school carnivals and targeted development initiatives designed to strengthen performance, teamwork and resilience.

Social-Emotional Domain

We foster leadership, cultural identity and connection through programs such as the Pasifika Performance Group and Aboriginal Dance Group, where students celebrate and perform rich cultural traditions through dance and music.

The Student Voice Team (SVT) builds leadership capacity through service, public speaking and positive community engagement.

Book Club extends students’ passion for reading, providing a space for thoughtful discussion and literary exploration.

Intellectual Domain

Students can challenge themselves through Chess Club competitions against other schools and through Inquisitive Minds, a hands-on mathematics enrichment initiative focused on problem-solving and curiosity.

Our teams compete in Tournament of Minds, a dynamic challenge requiring teamwork, creativity and critical thinking.

Students also participate in the Premier's Debating Challenge, developing reasoning and public speaking skills at a state-wide level.

Year 7 students launch their high school journey with Build ME a Future Day, an engaging STEM event designed to spark curiosity and inspire future pathways in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

At Francis Greenway High School, our HPGE programs ensure students are challenged, supported and celebrated. We look forward to another exciting year of opportunity, achievement and growth.

 Year 7 Creative Community Project

Creative Community Project provides students with an enrichment and extra-curricular opportunity that extends beyond the classroom into the wider community. Working with a small group of like-minded students with an artist practitioner to guide and grow students’ art-making abilities and experience. FGHS Creative Community Project is an intensive 2-day artmaking workshop for Year 7 students who demonstrate high potential and talent in the creative domain of visual arts. Students are tutored and guided by an experienced art practitioner while engaging in a community project for the local Beresfield Parish. The workshop will offer students the opportunity to gain new skills to extend their artmaking practice across a range of mediums and techniques in the form of public art. Father Stephen connected with FGHS to offer this community network and authentic artistic development opportunity.
