No Smoking or Vaping at School!
Did you know that by law, smoking and the use of e-cigarettes (vaping) is banned within the grounds of and within four metres of an entrance to, all childcare centres, kindergartens, preschools, and schools? [1 ] Section 5RD of the Tobacco Act 1987.
This ban ensures young people can enter and leave school without being exposed to harmful second-hand smoke and the aerosol from e-cigarettes.
Children and young people are more likely to view smoking and vaping as socially acceptable when they regularly see people smoking and vaping. Banning smoking in areas used by children and young people will help to de-normalise smoking and vaping behaviour and discourage children and young people from taking up smoking and vaping.
You may have noticed that Lilydale Heights College has 'no smoking/vaping' signage around the school grounds. These signs are part of our commitment to keeping our school a safe, healthy and respectful place for everyone.

Health Promotion Pop Up Stand
On Tuesday 31st March, the Secondary School Nurses from the Department of Education visited Lilydale Heights College at recess, to host an engaging health promotion pop-up stand focused on sun safety. Students were invited to participate in a range of interactive activities, including trying a UV detection sticker, practising proper sunscreen application, and checking their technique under a UV camera. They also had the opportunity to complete a short sun safety quiz to receive a prize. The stand was very well attended and provided students with a valuable opportunity to test their knowledge and build practical skills. Most importantly, it reinforced the message that sun safety is essential all year round, not just during the summer months.
