SELF

At Lilydale Heights College, we support all students to be ready to learn in every lesson by teaching simple strategies to help them manage their emotions and feel settled. These “Ready to Learn” strategies can be used if a student is feeling overwhelmed or unsettled, either before or during class.

This term, students have worked with their SELF teachers to identify the strategies that work best for them. These will be shared with classroom teachers so they can provide the right support when it’s needed.

Students also participated in the Resilient Youth Survey this term. The insights gathered will help staff better understand students’ social and emotional wellbeing, enabling us to plan targeted supports that strengthen engagement, maximise learning opportunities and support all students to thrive.

In Year 8 SELF, students have participated in a number of team building STEM activities. One included a marble run competition. Students reported it was fun and they enjoyed the opportunity to get creative and move around the room. 

Students in Year 10 have had an amazing start to SELF this year. We have had a big focus on organising Work Experience and the students have chosen a large variety of industries to try out in May. We look forward to seeing how our Year 10's go in the workforce!

Year 11 students explored career pathways in SELF this term. They revisited their Morrisby Career Profile from Year 9 and explored different pathways to help them achieve their goals for 2027.

In Week 7, student ambassadors from Deakin University visited the year level to speak about life after secondary school. Students enthusiastically engaged with this opportunity, asking thoughtful questions and gaining valuable insights into future study and career options.
