HANDS ON LEARNING

It’s been another busy and productive month in Hands on Learning. We’ve finished freshening up the shed with paint and cladding, completed the red brick edging and added new plants in pallet beds at the entrance. We’ll continue improving the space to make it more practical and welcoming for students.    Students also worked together to design and build a tranquil pond using repurposed rocks and an old bathtub, turning simple materials into something both functional and calming. This project strengthened teamwork, problem-solving and practical skills, while highlighting the value of sustainability and creativity.   We also enjoyed a visit from Paula Grinbergs, who brought great energy to the shed. Along with her music background at LHC, she shared her gardening knowledge, helping students repot succulents and plant snapdragons that will soon bring colour to the space. The students loved the experience, and we really appreciate the time and knowledge she shared with us.

Get to Know the Teacher

We’d love for students and families to get to know the people behind the Hands On Learning Program. In each newsletter, we’ll introduce a team member and share a little about who they are and how they support our students.

Meet Ashley Roberts

Hello my name is Ash, I have been working in the Hands On Learning Program for just over two years and have really enjoyed being part of such a rewarding program at Lilydale Heights College. Before this, I taught Maths at The Heights, and earlier in my career I worked as a primary school teacher.

I love Hands on Learning because it gives students the chance to learn through practical projects and teamwork. It’s great to see them build confidence, try new things, and feel proud of what they create. A highlight of the program is building positive relationships and working alongside students as they develop valuable life skills for beyond school.   Outside of school, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors with my two daughters and our energetic dog, Maggie.
