Great Start to the Year

The staff at Scoresby Secondary College kicked off the school year with a highly productive professional learning program on Tuesday, January 28.

The program focused on enhancing student learning experiences, which resonates deeply with our commitment to educational excellence.

During this event, our dedicated educators had the opportunity to continue to refine our curriculum collaboratively, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.

We remain committed to supporting every student at their point of need. We will provide advanced materials for those requiring extension work while ensuring additional support is available for students who need it most. Our Sub-School teams are actively exploring the best ways to assist students both in and out of the classroom, ensuring that we are attentive to the diverse needs of every individual.

Wednesday, 29 January, was filled with nervous excitement as we welcomed our new Year 7 students and the return of our Year 11 and 12 students and commenced what we love best: education!

We celebrated all students returning to school on Thursday, January 30, with a whole school assembly. We were excited to announce our school leaders for 2025:

Year 12 Learning Conversations

We are pleased to announce the introduction of Learning Conversations for all students enrolled in a scored VCE subject on Thursday, 6 March. These conversations serve as a collaborative partnership among teachers, parents, and students, focusing on the identification of individual strengths as well as areas for further development.

After five weeks of Year 12 classes, we believe we have gathered sufficient insights to effectively support our VCE students in achieving their optimal study scores.

Compass

All parents / guardians of students have access to the Compass Parent Portal (https://scoresbysc-vic.compass.education).

Compass is an excellent and efficient way for parents to keep up to date with their son/daughter’s progress at school. Through the Parent Portal, you can:

view up-to-date class and school attendance information;
approve past or future absences (medical certificates will need to be provided to approve VCE/VCAL absences);
book your Parent/Student/Teacher conferences; and
access information regarding upcoming events via the Calendar and news.

Parents are reminded they should not share their Parent Portal password with their son/daughter. Students have their own access to Compass.

If you have had any difficulty accessing your Parent Portal account or using it, please contact the office.

Study Periods

Students in Year 11 and 12 may have study periods throughout the week. These are provided as part of the timetable so students can study, complete work, meet with teachers, liaise with the careers coordinator etc.

Students are therefore required to be in attendance at school from the start of each day, even if they have a study period first period of the day (Year 11 - 8:45 am, Year 12 – 8:50 am; assembly days 8:35 am).

Riding to School

For the safety of the students riding their bikes to and from school, they are reminded that by law they are required to wear a helmet while riding.

Students that elect to bring their bike to school are also reminded that they must dismount and walk their bike through the school grounds to the bike shed.

Students should also ensure that their bike is locked with a secure lock.

Term 1 News

What a fantastic start to the year it has been! I am Michelle de Boer, leading Teaching and Learning, Inclusion Leader, and am also overseeing Wellbeing.

It has been a pleasure to see students settling into their routines, embracing new challenges, and engaging in their learning with enthusiasm.

I look forward to working closely with our students, staff, and families to ensure a supportive and enriching year ahead.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 7 and 9 students are held in March each year. In 2025, the NAPLAN test window is between Wednesday 12 March and Monday 24 March.

NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN tests are delivered in an online format. This delivers many benefits including:

A public demonstration site is available for schools, teachers, parents, carers and students to familiarise themselves with the online tests.

All eligible students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Catch up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days up to and including Monday 24 March 2025.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.

Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. If your child is eligible for support due to disability or exemption, you should discuss this with his/her teacher prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the principal. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a student withdrawal form. These forms are available at the school.

At Scoresby Secondary College, our Doctors in Schools initiative plays a vital role in promoting student well-being.
