Pathways & Careers
As we kick off the new year, we’re excited to welcome all students back to Scoresby and reflect on the incredible start to 2025!
It's been a busy few weeks in careers with students diving straight into a variety of VET programs (Vocational Education and Training), gaining hands-on experience in fields such as engineering, beauty, construction, community services, automotive, early learning, computer assembly and repair, and so much more. VET is a fantastic program offered to all our VCE students providing a range of opportunities for students to gain valuable industry skills, receive a certificate in that area and leave school, not just with their VCE but also a qualification in an area of interest.
This year, Scoresby Secondary College has experienced a significant increase in the number of students enrolling in our VET programs.
We offer a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation and a Certificate III in Music Performance, with students from schools across the region joining us on Wednesday afternoons to develop their skills in these dynamic and rewarding fields.
Our VCE Vocational Major (VM) students have been settling into their programs with dedication, focusing on both their academic and practical learning.
We’re also seeing some fantastic progress from students completing SBATs (School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships), who are beginning to secure apprenticeships and are already hard at work, gaining invaluable experience in the workplace.
The Year 12 Residential Camp was another major highlight! Despite the heat, the students had a fantastic time. We were lucky to be joined by some amazing guest speakers, many of whom were past students of Scoresby! Their insights and experiences were truly inspiring. The camp also included a visit to the University of Melbourne, which gave our Year 12 students a great insight into university life and future study pathways.
In Careers, we’ve got a lot planned for 2025! We’re kicking things off with Morrisby for our Year 9 students, Morrisby Profiling is a well-established career assessment tool designed to help students better understand their skills, interests, and aptitudes. It provides a comprehensive set of psychometric tests, career information, and personalized guidance to help young people make informed decisions about their future education and career pathways.
The profiling tool evaluates various aspects of a student's strengths, including cognitive abilities (like problem-solving and logical thinking), personality traits, and interests. Based on these assessments, Morrisby provides tailored career recommendations, helping students identify potential career options that align with their natural abilities and personal preferences and supports students as they transition into the senior years for subject selections.
Students will be completing the online quizzes in the last week of term 1 with external Morrisby Career Practitioners coming to school in term 2 to meet directly with the students and unpack their results.
We will be completing Career Action Plans for all students from Years 7 to 12, helping them explore their future options and set goals for their careers.
We’ll be heading out on University visits to Deakin, Monash, and Swinburne so students can get a feel for campus life and courses.
Year 10 students will attend the Career Expo held in July in Melbourne. It is a major event designed to connect students, job seekers, and career changers with a wide range of employers, training providers, and educational institutions.
It provides an opportunity for students to explore various career pathways, gather information on different industries, and engage with professionals offering valuable insights into potential career and pathway options.
Throughout the year there will also be opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals, we’ll be hosting visits from the ADF and other guest speakers who will provide valuable career insights.
Of course, we’re also continuing our focus on Work Experience, helping students connect with employers and gain real-world experience in their chosen fields. Year 10 students will complete their work experience the last week of term 2. Time is flying by, so if you haven’t already this is a reminder to all year 10 students to start asking family, friends and cold calling to companies of interest to secure your placement.
It’s shaping up to be a amazing year full of opportunities, learning, and growth. We can’t wait to see all our students continue to thrive and achieve success in their chosen pathways and we look forward to showcase some inspiring stories of our students and their journey along their chosen pathways.
