Science Sparks: An Exciting Start to 2025

The beginning of a new school year always brings a buzz of excitement and anticipation, but for our new Year 7 students, this year is especially thrilling. Stepping into dedicated science classrooms filled with specialised equipment and real scientific chemicals marks a significant and inspiring milestone in their educational journey.

Our 2025 Year 7 cohort has made a fantastic start to secondary school science, displaying remarkable enthusiasm and curiosity. Students have already delved into the impressive contributions of Australian scientists to our society. As the term progresses, they’ll explore high school laboratory equipment and conduct their first experiments, honing their skills in making precise scientific observations.

A particularly exciting milestone awaits as students prepare to earn their Bunsen Burner licenses. This achievement will pave the way for more advanced experiments and investigations.

Later this term, they will dive into the fascinating world of states of matter and learn how to separate mixtures through scientific processes.

Year 8 students recently attended an engaging program at KIOSC as part of their energy unit. They explored the pressing challenges of energy use and climate change, investigating how innovative technologies can reduce humanity's impact on the planet. The program also introduced them to the concept of hydrogen-fuelled cars, which they will explore further in upcoming lessons.

In Year 9, students are immersing themselves in the study of chemical reactions. During their KIOSC visit, they examined the chemistry driving the green energy revolution, linking classroom learning to real-world sustainability initiatives.

Year 10 students have been delving into the fascinating field of genetics. They applied their newfound knowledge in a fun and creative project, becoming the proud "parents" of young "vegetable people." A visit to KIOSC further enriched their understanding, offering insights into practical applications of genetics, including the critical field of cancer screening.

Meanwhile, our senior students in VCE Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology have hit the ground running. They are deeply engaged in their coursework, building a solid foundation for future academic and career pathways.
