French News

Bonjour dear parents and students,
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Autumn break.
Our French team -Miss Martine, Madame Ma, Mr. Zach and Mr. Kirby- are excited to begin another term filled with engaging lessons and cultural experiences. This term will be packed with exciting events, including our French Poetry Competition and Le Jour de la Francophonie. Assessments will take place mid-term, with student reports distributed at the end of the term.
Below is a snapshot of what each year level will be exploring in Term 2:
Prep
Students will extend their knowledge of numbers (6–10) and how to express preferences of farm animals in French. Mid-term assessments will include both written and verbal components. To finish the term, students will explore family members, revise the alphabet (A–J), colours, and simple manners.
Grade 1
Students will learn to present a farm animal and describe its colour in French. They will then explore classroom objects and practise using complete sentences. After assessments, students will learn about emotions, manners, numbers (1–20), and months of the year.
Grade 2
Students will explore family members and wild animals, learning to use them in simple sentences. They will extend their knowledge of emotions in French before completing their assessments. The term will conclude with further work on family and an introduction to the history of France and Quebec.
Grade 3
Students will focus on vowel sounds, word endings, subject pronouns, verb endings, and weather expressions. Following their assessment, they will explore sports, everyday questions, French-speaking countries, and the presence of French in Australia.
Grade 4
Students will learn about negative sentence structures, extend their understanding of emotions, and work with numbers (0–80). After their written assessment, they will reflect on multilingualism in Australia and research a Francophone country of their choice.
Grade 5
Students will develop their pronunciation of letter sounds, learn to conjugate -re verbs, form negative sentences, and construct questions to create a survey. After assessments, they will explore avoir and être, as well as vocabulary related to towns, restaurants, and food.
Grade 6
Students will build on their knowledge of pronunciation, -re verb conjugation, negative sentences, and question formation through survey creation. Following assessments, they will explore letter combinations, revise avoir and être, and learn more about Francophone countries.
