Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!
We have had a fantastic start to Term 2, with students settling back into learning impressively.
English
In English, we have begun our English unit, Understanding Economics. Students have been learning about the differences between wants and needs, goods and services, and how demand for a product influences supply. We have worked together to brainstorm some fantastic product and service ideas, determine their target audiences, and identify the resources required to bring them to life. Students have drafted their introductory paragraphs to introduce their product to their audience, which we will continue to draft over the next few weeks. We are so excited to see these pitches presented at the end of the unit!
Mathematics
In Year 5 Mathematics, we have been focusing on the concepts of area and perimeter. Students have been using a variety of different methods to calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes and objects. In Week 2, we will be moving to a new unit focused on fractions. Students will work with fractions with the same or related denominators. They will be using their understanding of the values of different fractions to compare and order them on number lines. This includes proper and improper fractions, as well as mixed numerals. Please continue to practice times tables, facts, and skip-counting patterns at home to support students' understanding of multiples, which will support us in our fractions unit.
Reminders
- iPads are charged for school every day
