Grade 4 Community News

Dear Year 4 Families,

Welcome to Term 2! We hope all our families enjoyed a relaxing and refreshing break. This term promises to be a busy and exciting one, with plenty of engaging learning opportunities, events, and activities planned for our students. Please keep an eye on upcoming newsletters and notices for important dates and updates.

Below is an overview of what students are learning across key curriculum areas, in weeks 1 and 2.

English:

We are excited to begin Term 2 with our new class novel, Uncle Xbox. The Year 4 team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who ensured your child has a copy of the book. Having a physical text greatly supports students in connecting deeply with the plot of the Novel. Through this rich text, students will explore themes, characters, and the author’s purpose, while continuing to strengthen their reading comprehension skills. They will participate in shared, guided, and independent reading activities to support their learning.

In writing, we will continue developing our understanding of factual recounts. Students will focus on text structure, writing in chronological order, and using time connectives, while further strengthening their spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students are learning to order larger numbers while deepening their understanding of place value. They have also been exploring the key features of bar graphs and developing their skills in interpreting the data presented in the graph.

Students will begin investigating number patterns and further strengthen their understanding of 2D shapes by exploring combined and split shapes. Throughout all areas, there will be a continued focus on problem-solving, with students encouraged to explain their thinking and reasoning when working through mathematical tasks.

Digital Technologies:

Year 4 students will continue developing their skills in using digital tools safely and effectively. They have been learning to recognise different emotions they may experience in both online and offline situations, and how to respond appropriately and seek help when needed. Students will also explore the importance of being responsible and smart screen users.

Respectful Relationships

As respectful relationships are an important part of our classroom learning, we began the term by exploring the importance of respecting diversity. During the week, students will learn some fun and engaging coping strategies to help them manage challenges and stress. Through this program, students will be supported in building positive relationships and developing their social and emotional skills.
