NEWS AND UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES

It has been a big first few weeks of term in the Student Excellence space.

Congratulations to all children grade 5 and 6 children who were invited to sit the entry assessments for the Maths Olympiad team, we are all very proud of the effort and resilience shown by those that participated. Everyone worked so hard and it was really tough to narrow it down to just 30 year 5 and 30 year 6 students.

We are still waiting on just a few parent permissions to come through on Compass before the team is finalised, so if your child was selected, please ensure consent is given as other children are waiting to see if any available spots come up.

A big thank you to Miss Varela and Mr Scott for volunteering to lead this opportunity for our students, and an even bigger thank you to Miss Ireland for stepping up for the first session while Mr Scott was away. They were blown away by the mathematical knowledge in the room!

Our VHAP Maths students had their first session this week and our Maths Games sessions and Maths Explorers will begin next week for our grade 3 and 4 high ability maths students.

EXTRA READING FOR PARENTS

As always, the extracurricular opportunities we provide children outside of the regular classroom are an intervention aimed at providing high potential, high ability and gifted children a place to meet with like-minded individuals, build identify and lean into areas of challenge to help develop the whole child, not just academic endeavours. Many of the children we work with struggle with anxiety and identity. The following link is a pagefrom the Raising Children Network about behaviour, emotions and social development in talented and highability children. It can be summarised in the following key points, click the link below to read more.

Gifted children and talented children: behaviour, emotions and social development.

Key Points:

• Gifted children and talented children can often have strong emotions, interests and opinions.

• Sometimes gifted children and talented children get along well with others. Other times, it might seem that they don’t fit in.

• Gifted children and talented children might behave in challenging ways because they feel frustrated or lack learning opportunities.

• You can tailor strategies to support the emotional, social and behavioural needs of gifted children and talented children.
