English

This week and last week in English, our Grade 6 students have begun our novel study of The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett.

The novel has already sparked thoughtful discussion as students explore the opening chapters and develop their understanding of character, setting, and theme. So far, students have read about Marcelle and Coco, two sisters who discover a blind soldier hiding in the woods during wartime. Through class discussion and comprehension activities, students have examined the developing mystery of Lieutenant Shepard, his connection to the silver donkey, and the significance of storytelling within the novel. We have also explored how the author builds suspense, reveals character emotions, and introduces important themes such as kindness, courage, hope, and compassion.

Alongside our novel study, students have been developing their narrative writing skills through a focus on fables.

Over the past two weeks, students have been learning to:

  • identify the purpose, structure, and key features of a fable
  • plan a fable using the required story grammar elements
  • use personification to give animal characters human qualities
  • expand simple sentences with precise detail
  • write sentences using two pairs of adjectives
  • include direct speech correctly
  • create similes to strengthen description
  • plan and write an effective character and setting introduction
  • plan and write an action paragraph that develops the problem in the story

Students are beginning to apply these skills to create their own original fables, with a strong focus on clear moral lessons, rich vocabulary, and engaging sentence structure.

It has been wonderful to see students building confidence in both their reading discussions and their writing craft.

Maths

Last week, students were continuing their learning about fractions. They were practicing how to find equivalent fractions (fractions that are the same value) and how to compare fractions that have related denominators. They were also using number lines to help them see and understand the size of different fractions.

This week, students are learning simple strategies, such as doubling and halving, to change fractions so they have the same denominator. This helps them compare fractions more easily. Furthermore, we will focus on helping students understand the size (magnitude) of fractions more deeply. Students will learn how to compare and order fractions by changing them to have the same denominator. They will also begin to use ideas like the highest common factor and the lowest common multiple in simple ways.

Later in this unit, students will use these skills to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. This builds on their Year 5 learning, where they added and subtracted fractions with the same or related denominators.

Sport

The students have continued to participate in AFL, netball, softball, soccer, and volleyball on Friday afternoons as preparation for Gala Day continues. If your child has been selected for a Gala Day team, please use Compass to give permission for their participation when this goes live.
