Performing Arts News

Hi Tarneit Rise families,

Welcome back to Term 2 in Performing Arts! We’re excited to begin another fantastic term of music-making, creativity, and cultural exploration across all year levels. Students have returned with great energy and enthusiasm, and it has been wonderful to see them engaging with new learning and building on their skills from Term 1.

Our Prep students have had a joyful start to the term with a strong focus on singing. In Week 1, they explored using their singing voices and confidently performed the “Flower Song” to the class, as well as learning the song “Over the Deep Blue Sea.” In Week 2, students began developing their understanding of beat through fun body percussion activities and explored pitch by singing a variety of songs. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they perform and participate.

In Grades 1 and 2, students began the term by exploring and comparing Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal music in Week 1. They listened to and discussed both traditional and contemporary songs, developing an appreciation for the rich musical cultures of Australia’s First Nations peoples. In Week 2, students were introduced to the glockenspiel, where they began learning how to play simple notes and patterns, building foundational skills in instrumental music.

Grade 3 students explored cultural connections to music in Week 1, discussing how music is used in celebrations such as Diwali, Holi, Christmas, and Aboriginal festivals. This encouraged thoughtful conversations about the role of music in different cultures and traditions. In Week 2, students were excited to begin learning the keyboard, focusing on basic techniques and familiarising themselves with the instrument.

Similarly, Grade 4 students began their term by learning about Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal musical culture in Week 1, deepening their understanding of Australia’s rich cultural heritage. In Week 2, they also started learning how to play the keyboard, developing their skills in hand positioning and note recognition.

Students in Grades 5 and 6 have been engaged in a deeper exploration of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal history and culture across both weeks, with a strong focus on music. They have been discussing the significance of music in storytelling, identity, and cultural expression, showing thoughtful engagement and respect in their learning.

It has been a wonderful start to the term, and we look forward to seeing all students continue to grow in confidence, creativity, and musical understanding throughout Term 2.
