Year 1/2

We’ve had another busy and exciting few weeks in our classroom!
Inform & Empower – Session 1: What is the Internet?
We began our Inform and Empower sessions by exploring “What is the Internet?” Students discussed how the internet connects people around the world, how we use it in our daily lives, and the importance of using it safely and responsibly. It has been wonderful to hear their thoughtful ideas and questions.
Maths
In Maths, we have been delving into place value with 2- and 3-digit numbers. Students are building a strong understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones, and explaining their thinking when solving problems.
Our daily review continues to consolidate key number skills, and we have also been revisiting our data unit to reinforce learning.
Reading
We recently wrapped up our The Imagineer unit and reflected on the creativity shown throughout the story.
Next, we are beginning our new History-focused unit, Exploring the Continent, where we will learn about the arrival of the First Fleet and how Australia’s coastline was mapped. Students will practise asking and answering thoughtful questions as they build their understanding of early exploration.
Writing
In Writing, students have been learning about common and proper nouns, focusing on correct capital letter use.
We have also been experimenting with alliteration and are creating a fun class book filled with creative, descriptive sentences.
Wellbeing
Our focus has been on the keys to communication — getting someone’s attention, using a clear talking voice, and listening respectfully. Students have also been identifying and celebrating their personal strengths, which has been lovely to see.
Incursion Highlights
We recently enjoyed a fantastic visit from Scott Darlow. Students learned about music, culture, and storytelling, explored the sounds of the didgeridoo, and heard about the meaningful artwork on Scott’s guitar. It was an engaging and memorable experience for everyone.
Start Right Games
The 1/2s had a ball participating in the Start Right Celebration Games. They rotated through a range of fun activities led by our Grade 6 students, who did a fantastic job organising and supporting each group. The games were a special reward for the wonderful start students have made to the term, consistently following expectations and demonstrating our school values. It was lovely to see their teamwork, enthusiasm and positive attitudes on display.
