Thriving Minds Conference

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be lighted.” This sentiment was brought to life for eight students from Years 9, 10 and 11, who enjoyed an inspiring and thought-provoking day at the Thriving Minds Conference at Guildford Grammar on Wednesday.

The conference provided students with the opportunity to explore a range of fascinating ideas through presentations and discussions led by expert speakers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Topics included Music: The Brain and Healing, How We Accept Evidence, When, If Ever, Can We Break Rules? and What Free Will Actually Means?

Throughout the day, students were encouraged to question assumptions, consider different perspectives and think deeply about some of the complex ideas that shape the way we understand ourselves and the world around us. They also had the opportunity to debate and exchange ideas with students from colleges across Perth, putting their own reasoning and communication skills into practice.

The experience challenged students to think beyond the classroom and engage with ideas in a curious, open-minded and considered way. They returned to Mazenod with plenty to reflect upon and, most importantly, a renewed enthusiasm for asking questions, exploring ideas and living a more examined life.
