Team Mazzarati Shines

On Wednesday, 12 August, Team Mazzarati, consisting of Lincoln R-F, Zachariah M, Hudson B and Stuart H, travelled to Mercy College in Koondoola to represent the College at the 2026 CEWA Perth STEM Showcase. The state wide event brought together Catholic primary and secondary schools from across Western Australia to celebrate innovation, curiosity and real-world problem-solving.

Representing Mazenod as Team Mazzarati, the students presented their project, Sustainability Squad: Innovation Driven by Hydrogen - the design, construction and optimisation of a hydrogen-powered model race car that earned them a place at the World Finals in Germany in 2025. Building on their involvement in the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) program, the team set out to connect classroom theory with authentic, future-focused STEM learning. In doing so, they developed valuable skills in problem-solving, collaboration and engineering.

The Showcase offered a full day of STEM immersion, beginning with a panel of industry professionals, including guests from the Perth Observatory and The Kids Research Institute Australia. Students then explored industry exhibitor booths featuring organisations such as the WA Data Science Innovation Hub and the WA Space Science Education Centre.

Team Mazzarati joined hundreds of other student projects from schools across the CEWA network for the main showcase session, where they confidently fielded questions from visiting staff, students and industry guests about their design process, the technology behind their hydrogen-powered vehicle and the challenges they overcame along the way.

Events such as the CEWA Perth STEM Showcase reflect exactly what we hope to instil in our students - curiosity paired with purpose and technical skill grounded in a genuine care for sustainability and the world around them. Opportunities like these allow students to take learning beyond the classroom, test their ideas in authentic settings and see how STEM can be used to address real-world challenges.
