Welcome to Term 2!
Level 5 has had a fabulous start to Term 2!
Please remember that Sovereign Hill camp is on Monday the 4th of May. We are all very excited and ready for some incredible learning experiences and fun. Please note that medications can be signed into Mrs Latu on Friday afternoon after school in BER2 or on Monday morning outside the gym from 8.30am. All medications must be clearly labelled and documented.
Celebrations!!!
Cross Country!!!
We are so proud of the determination and resilience shown by the Level 5 students as they pushed themselves to the limit at cross country on Tuesday. The encouragement and support they showed one another was wonderful! Thank you to Mr. Hodgson and all his teacher and parent helpers for their hard work.
Reading
Level 5 has begun the class novel "The Lemonade War" to explore real-world and literacy skills. In Reading, Maths and Inquiry this term we will study economics and entrepreneurship with a focus on profit, loss, pricing, and marketing. We aim to build prediction skills and literal and inferential reading comprehension. Students will learn to analyze character traits, motivations, and relationships. Teachers will plan persuasive, reflective, and analytical writing tasks tied to the novel.
Writing
This term we will focus on building strong informational writing skills by teaching students to plan and write clear, organized reports that explain a topic using facts. Lessons will include using the "6+1 Traits" with emphasis on ideas and organization. Students will use a writer’s notebook to capture and develop ideas, generating and selecting relevant topics, researching reliable sources and taking concise notes, and paraphrasing information to show understanding. They will be crafting coherent paragraphs with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
Maths
Throughout the next few weeks in Maths, students will explore financial math and budgeting, develop problem-solving skills and learn to understand and compare data. They will practise estimation, rounding and mathematical reasoning. Students will work with the concept of 'best buys' and work with percentages, decimals and fractions including percentage change and discounts.
Inquiry
"Money Matters" is the Level 5 Inquiry topic this term. Students will explore entrepreneurship, work, and economic resources, and will develop an understanding of personal finance, consumer decision-making, taxation, and the benefits of work for individuals and the community.
