Level 4

A big welcome back to all our Level 4 students and families. We are thrilled to be back at school, ready for more learning, more fun and more events!

On Tuesday, we had our annual Cross Country event. The students ran a new course at H.E Parker Reserve, and enjoyed cheering on their peers from the side lines, and trying their best in the race. Congratulations to those who received a ribbon, and those who gave it their best!

Reading

In Reading, students have been developing their ability to make inferences. This means they are learning to read between the lines- using clues from the text along with their own background knowledge to understand deeper meanings, characters’ feelings, and underlying messages. This is an important skill that strengthens comprehension and critical thinking.

Writing

In Writing, we have begun exploring persuasive texts. Students are learning how to express their opinions clearly, support their ideas with reasons and evidence, and structure their arguments in a convincing way. They are enjoying forming strong viewpoints and thinking about how to influence their audience. This week, we are exploring a variety of persuasive devices such as; The Rule of 3, emotive language, and exaggeration and rhetorical questions. If you want to know more about these devices, ask your child!

In Mathematics, our focus has been on multiplication and division. Students are learning a range of strategies to solve division problems, including using arrays, repeated subtraction, and related multiplication facts. We are encouraging flexible thinking so students can choose the most effective strategy for each problem.

Supporting your child's learning at home:

If you are interested in engaging with your child in their learning at home, below are some helpful hints for how to do this. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.

  • Reading: Ask your child questions about what they are reading, such as “Why do you think the character did that?” or “What clues helped you figure that out?” to encourage inference skills.
  • Writing: Encourage your child to share their opinions on everyday topics and explain their reasoning. This could be as simple as discussing which movie to watch or what to have for dinner.
  • Mathematics: Practise division through real-life situations, such as sharing items equally or grouping objects. Encourage your child to explain their thinking and the strategy they used. A good one for this is at dinner time when you're plating up, get your child to equally share the meal across family members. This is a fun and interactive way to engage with division in real life.

Prior Learning

Last term the students focused on Multiplication. Below is an anchor chart that touches on the strategies that the students learned. To help build on your child's learning, you may like to give them a few multiplication equations and get them to recall and apply their strategies from below, to solve the problem.
