What's happening in our classroom?
Literacy
This term, our Year 4 students have enthusiastically begun our new novel study, Uncle Xbox by Jared Thomas. The story follows a young boy who visits his Aboriginal family in the country and discovers the importance of culture, family, connection to Country and community through the guidance of his Uncle Xbox.
Students are already excited to begin reading the novel together, and we look forward to exploring its characters, themes and rich cultural perspectives throughout the term.
Numeracy
Over the coming weeks students will be learning about Fractions. This will involve identifying equivalent fractions for halves, quarters and eighths. Students will show equivalent fractions using number lines, a bar model and shapes. They will practice locating fractions on a number line and any equivalent fractions.
As part of our maths learning students will be exploring the topic of location. This will involve students learning about the features of a map such as a legend, scale and orientation (North, South, East and West). Students will have the chance to create their own island map, locate specifics on the map using a grid reference system and include features such as a legend, scale and title.
Inquiry
As part of our Inquiry learning students will exploring a unit titled 'Climate and Weather'.
This unit will cover the following key understandings:
- Students will learn the difference between weather (short-term conditions) and climate (long-term patterns).
- They will use climate graphs to interpret temperature and rainfall data.
- Students will investigate how human activities, including deforestation, agriculture, urbanisation and pollution, can affect weather and climate.
- Students will examine how people have adapted and responded to changing climates throughout history.
