Connect: Year 2
Dear Grade 2 Families,
We are approaching the middle of the term, and teaching and learning are progressing rapidly. There have been some wet days recently, so please remember to have a spare change of clothes in your child's bag in case they have an accident out in the yard and need to change. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's classroom teacher.

Literacy
Over the next two weeks, we're going on an exciting spelling and reading adventure! Students will discover the secrets of /er/ spellings—both the common ones and the tricky, less-known ones. They’ll also see how adding “er” and “est” can turn words into super describers and comparers, making their writing even more interesting!
In our writing time, we’ll get creative by learning how to organise and build awesome informative paragraphs. We’ll also explore the cool features of informative texts, using the inspiring non-fiction book The First Scientists by Corey Tutt as our guide.
It’s going to be a fun journey of discovery and learning! :)
Numeracy
In maths, students are embarking on a fun adventure with their daily times tables practise! They've been focusing on their 2 times tables and are becoming quite speedy. Soon, they will move on to practising the 5s and 10s. Students will also continue exploring arrays and bar models to help visualise mathematical problems. As they progress, they will start making connections to more complex concepts involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Wellbeing
In the coming weeks, students will use the ‘thinking hoops’ model to organise their ideas and identify possible sources of help for their problems. They will also act out some problem-solving and help-seeking strategies to build confidence and independence in their learning.
Inquiry
Our space unit of inquiry has successfully taken off and is whirling through the universe! Students are over the moon learning about the eight planets and exploring the fascinating objects that make up the solar system. In the coming weeks, they will be moonwalking into the phases of the Moon and star-gazing as they recreate constellations, including those of First Nations Australians, using craft materials.
