Maths Extension
Maths Extension is a program I run for selected students from Foundation to Year 6 who demonstrate advanced understanding and skills in the mathematics currently being taught in their classroom.
The groups are flexible and change throughout the year depending on the unit of work and the mathematical concepts being taught. Students are selected based on assessment data and classroom evidence that shows they have already mastered the year-level learning and are ready for additional challenge and extension.
I understand that many students would enjoy being part of the Maths Extension program. However, it is designed to meet the needs of students who require further challenge beyond the classroom program. The mathematics taught in each classroom is carefully planned to meet the learning needs of all students, ensuring everyone is supported to make progress at their own level.
One of my priorities is to help every student develop confidence, success and a love of mathematics. For some students, the extension tasks would be difficult and could impact their confidence. It is important that students are working at a level that is both appropriately challenging and achievable.
I hope this helps explain how students are selected for the Maths Extension program and why the groups may change throughout the year. Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding as we strive to provide the most appropriate learning opportunities for every child.
