Year 1 STEM – Exploring Light, Shadow Puppetry & Animation

Our Year 1 students have been discovering the fascinating world of light, shadow puppetry, and animation during their STEM lessons this term.

Students began by exploring the history of shadow puppetry, learning how this ancient storytelling tradition has been used for thousands of years across many cultures. They investigated how light travels, how shadows are formed, and how silhouettes can be used to create characters and tell imaginative stories.

Working collaboratively in small groups, students designed and created their own animal shadow puppets using silhouette shapes. They then carefully discussed and decided where each animal should be placed inside the Light Box to help tell their story. Through teamwork, students experimented with positioning, movement, and sequencing to create engaging animated scenes.

This exciting learning experience encouraged students to communicate, collaborate, solve problems, and think creatively while developing an understanding of the science of light and shadow. It was wonderful to see every group work together to bring their animal stories to life through shadow puppetry and animation.

We are incredibly proud of the creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm our Year 1 students demonstrated as they became storytellers, scientists, and animators!
