Grade 6 Community News

Dear Year 6 families,
Over the final two weeks of Term 2, our Grade 6 students continued to work hard across all learning areas. Students demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a positive attitude throughout the final weeks. We are proud of the effort students have shown in their learning and the maturity they have displayed as leaders within the school. We wish all families a safe and relaxing holiday break and look forward to an exciting Term 3.
PJ Day!
On Friday, Week 9, children came to school dressed in their favourite PJs! This was a great way for Grade 6 to raise money for their graduation and enjoy a comfy day of learning in this cold weather.
English
Over the past two weeks in English, our Year 6 learners continued reflecting on their personal journeys as they worked on their autobiographies. Students explored their beginnings, important memories, challenges, and achievements while developing their writing skills through planning, drafting, editing, and revising.
It was wonderful to see learners making personal connections and expressing themselves with confidence and creativity. A big thank you to all parents and guardians for supporting your child with their autobiographies and ensuring they were completed on time. Your encouragement and involvement at home play such an important role in helping our learners develop confidence in their writing and storytelling. We truly appreciate your partnership in making this learning journey meaningful and successful.
Alongside this, we also explored biography writing, where students identified someone they admire and investigated their life, achievements, and qualities. Through this, learners developed important skills such as researching information, note-taking, organising ideas in chronological order, summarising key details, and writing in a clear and engaging way. This learning helped students reflect on the qualities they value in others while making meaningful connections between their own journeys and the lives of those they admire.
We also introduced Spelling Mastery this term, and it was an exciting addition to our learning. The program provided a fantastic way to strengthen students’ spelling, vocabulary, and word knowledge. It was great to see learners highly engaged, eager to participate, and building confidence in their literacy skills.
Looking ahead to Term 3, our new class novel will be Black Cockatoo. This text will support our reading comprehension, discussion, and writing activities. Please ensure that your child has a copy of the novel ready for the beginning of next term so they can fully participate in class learning.
Thank you for your ongoing support in your child’s literacy journey. We appreciated your partnership and looked forward to another exciting term of learning and growth.
Maths
To conclude our learning for Term 2, Grade 6 students explored number patterns and algorithms. They designed algorithms to generate number sets, identified and created patterns using digital tools, and compared different number sets to explain relationships and rules. In the final week of term, students consolidated their learning from across the semester, revisiting key mathematical concepts and applying their skills in a variety of problem-solving contexts.
Humanities
This term, students investigated Australia's Federation from both national and global perspectives. They explored other federations and empires, researched significant individuals who contributed to Australia's development through the "Who Made a Difference?" task, and examined whether the Australian Constitution continues to meet the needs of modern society.
Throughout the unit, students developed their historical and critical thinking skills while considering how past decisions continue to influence Australia today.
