Grade 4 Community News

Dear Grade 4 Families,

As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding term, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support throughout Term 2. It has been a successful term filled with learning, growth, and many memorable classroom experiences. We are incredibly proud of the effort, resilience, and enthusiasm our students have shown, and we appreciate the partnership between home and school that helps make this possible.

English

This term, students have immersed themselves in the fascinating world of The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Through this unique wordless graphic novel, students explored themes of migration, belonging, courage, and new beginnings while developing their reading comprehension and writing skills.

Throughout the unit, students created and developed their own characters, analysed illustrations in detail, and learned how authors and illustrators communicate meaning through images. They planned, drafted, edited, and published their own meeting narratives, focusing on creating engaging characters, developing meaningful interactions, and using descriptive language to bring their stories to life. It has been wonderful to see students grow in confidence as writers, particularly when planning and revising their work. They have demonstrated creativity, imagination, and thoughtful reflection while producing narratives inspired by the text.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been challenged to apply their learning across a range of topics. We have focused on telling the time, calculating elapsed time, and solving increasingly complex change and total problems. Students have also developed their understanding of rounding numbers, regrouping four-digit numbers, and finding missing values in equations.

One of the highlights of this term has been the resilience students have shown when tackling challenging mathematical problems. They have learned that making mistakes is an important part of learning and have continued to persevere when faced with difficult tasks. It has been pleasing to see students becoming more confident in explaining their mathematical thinking and applying strategies independently. As always, continued practice of times tables and basic number facts at home will greatly support students as they move into more advanced mathematical concepts.

Looking Ahead

We are excited for the opportunities that Term 3 will bring and look forward to building on the strong foundations established this semester. We encourage students to enjoy a well-deserved break, spend time with family and friends, and return refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.

Reminders

  • Please ensure students bring a clearly labeled water bottle to school each day.

  • iPads should be fully charged and ready for learning each morning.

  • As we continue through the colder months, please ensure students have appropriate school uniform items, including jumpers and jackets.

  • Encouraging regular reading and times tables practice at home remains one of the best ways to support your child's learning.

Thank you once again for your support throughout this successful second term. We wish all Grade 4 families a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 3.

Kind regards,

The Grade 4 Team
