Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!

We hope you enjoyed the public holiday, staying warm in this new winter weather!

English

In English, we have finished reading our novel, The Silver Donkey, and have undertaken our end-of-term assessment, where we demonstrated our understanding. This included writing summary sentences, the use of literary devices, and the vocabulary learned over the course of the unit. We also completed writing our fables, finalising our conclusion then editing and revising our finished piece. Excitingly, we filmed ourselves reading our own fables which will be shared with the grade 1s, in the hope that our fables can share key morals just like the soldier’s did in our novel! True writing with a purpose!

Having completed 2 mastery tests now in term 2, our Spelling through Morphographs program is off to an amazing start. Students are beginning to apply their knowledge of morphographs across other areas of English as well, including vocabulary, which is amazing to see, and we will continue to encourage this in term 3.

Mathematics

Grade 5 pupils have completed two topics in maths before the holidays - 2D shape and time. In our shape unit, pupils learned three different transformations of shapes - rotations, translations, and reflections. For our time unit, pupils learned about 24-hour time and inspected schedules. Pupils were also given an opportunity to create their own schedules after picking a day of the week of their choice! Even though it is now the holidays, we would appreciate any practise of maths - practicing times tables on car journeys or even asking your child what the time is from an analog clock - these are just a couple of ideas!
