Disability Inclusion News

by Kiran Tibb, Disability Inclusion Coordinator

At our school, we run a range of programs that help our students develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Programs such as I CAN and Canine Comprehension provide opportunities for our students to build positive relationships, strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing, and develop practical strategies for everyday life.

I CAN Program

The I CAN Program provides students with a supportive space to better understand themselves, celebrate their strengths, and build confidence. Through interactive activities and discussions, students develop skills in communication, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and positive relationships. The program encourages students to embrace their individuality while recognising that everyone has unique strengths to contribute to our school community.

Student feedback:

“Through the I CAN sessions I felt like I belonged. I enjoyed the activities in the sessions.”

Canine Comprehension

The Canine Comprehension Program helps students develop confidence, emotional awareness, and positive social skills through guided interactions with therapy dogs.

Students learn about safe and respectful ways to interact with dogs while building communication, empathy, self-regulation, and resilience. The program provides a calm, engaging environment where students can practise important life skills and grow in confidence.

Student feedback:

“It was a chance to meet other people, and I learnt about self-regulation”.
