Mathematics News!
The mathematics faculty has been actively engaging students in rich, real-world learning tasks across all junior year levels this term.
Year 7 students investigated height data by collecting measurements from their classmates and calculating measures of centre and spread.
This hands-on activity allowed students to apply statistical concepts to meaningful data while developing their understanding of averages and variability.
Year 8 students explored head circumference data, comparing results using measures of centre and spread and representing findings through back-to-back stem-and-leaf plots.
Students developed their data analysis and interpretation skills while learning how statistics can be used to compare groups effectively.
Year 9 students have been participating in the “Around the World” project, where they investigated exchange rates and budgeting while planning international travel experiences. This rich task connected Mathematics to real-life financial decision-making and problem-solving.
Year 10 students have been examining simple and compound interest through the “Motor Mathematics” project. Students compared loan options and analysed the long-term financial impact of borrowing, helping them build practical financial literacy skills for the future.
These rich tasks continue to promote collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world application of Mathematics across the curriculum.
