Art News!
In Semester 1, we currently have three types of Visual Art classes running. All of the year 8 homegroups are doing Art this semester, and they were working throughout term 1 on a ceramic sculpture task.
They designed their own ‘hybrid animal’ like the mythical Chimera and have made them from earthenware clay. The sculptures have been glazed and fired and are looking fantastic, as you can see from the sample photos below! Look out for these sculptures at the Showcase later in the year.
We also have the new 3D art running as an elective at year 9/10, and they have explored both abstract and realistic sculpture.
Finally, there is the VCE Art Creative Practice class. Last term the Year 12 students produced a final artwork inspired by their study of a selected artist (see below) and they are now working on their final folio task. The Year 11s have been exploring the art forms of Mixed Media, Sculpture and Drawing, experimenting with a wide range of materials and techniques.
At the start of term the VCE class went to see the Top Arts exhibition at the NGV and look at the student folios, and also visited the exhibition ‘Mother’, also at the NGV at Federation Square. They engaged actively with the art, articulating their response to selected artworks and practising their analysis skills, and had a great day. Students reflected on the day in the following statements:
“My highlight of the day was the motherhood exhibition. I really like how they explored the many aspects of motherhood, even going into more spiritual ones, through such a variety of different artworks.” - Will
“I really enjoyed the excursion as it was very intriguing, and I love getting to view many amazing artworks. The experience was also very helpful and inspiring to see what others my age created and what I can achieve in my own work. Overall, it was a really great experience.”- Loumari
I am looking forward to seeing what new artworks will be created this term!

Product Design & Technology – Student Progress Report (Years 7–10)
Throughout the semester, students have demonstrated steady progress in their understanding and application of Product Design and Technology principles.
There has been clear growth in confidence, particularly in approaching practical tasks with greater independence and problem-solving ability.
Students have developed foundational knowledge of materials, including timber (both softwoods and selected hardwoods) and Perspex (acrylic).
They have built an understanding of material characteristics, appropriate applications, and the selection and use of suitable adhesives for different tasks. This knowledge has been applied effectively in the production of a range of projects.
In practical work, students have safely and competently used a variety of hand tools, with many also demonstrating emerging skills in the use of basic power tools under supervision.
There has been a strong emphasis on workshop safety, correct tool handling, and maintaining an organised workspace.
Projects completed across year levels include Perspex key tags, timber key holders, timber mug trees, novelty boxes using a range of hardwoods, and more complex builds such as Adirondack outdoor chairs.
These projects have allowed students to develop skills in measuring, marking out, cutting, shaping, joining, sanding, and finishing.
Encouragingly, students are showing increased attention to detail, improved accuracy, and a greater appreciation for quality finishes. Many are beginning to take pride in their craftsmanship and are more willing to refine and improve their work.
Overall, students are building a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, positioning them well for continued success in Product Design and Technology.

Music
Extra-curricular music is thriving at Scoresby SC with very busy instrumental, ensemble and VET music students rehearsing, performing and composing together. Performances by students across all year levels have included assembly performances, classroom performances, a VET music concert and weekly lunchtime Karaoke sessions.
Earlier this month Stephanie Gu (Year 9) represented Scoresby Secondary College at the North Eastern Victorian Region youth concert performing ‘Legends and Lore’ at Hamer Hall.
Multicultural day assembly performances for our Harmony Day celebrations were showcased recently.
We also have two ensembles keenly rehearsing for an inter-school battle of the bands coming up later in the term.
