English News!
In English this term, students across Years 7–12 have been working hard to develop their reading, writing and analytical skills.
Students in Years 7–9 are currently focusing on text response, exploring how authors create meaning through characters, themes, language and structure.
Through class discussions and written analysis, students are building confidence in expressing thoughtful interpretations and supporting their ideas with evidence from texts.
Students in Years 10–12 are focusing on crafting texts, where they are experimenting with language, structure and style to create engaging and purposeful pieces of writing. Senior students are refining their ability to write for different audiences and purposes while developing creativity, clarity and control in their written expression.
Families can play an important role in supporting reading and writing skills at home.
Encouraging regular reading, whether it be novels, newspaper articles, magazines or even podcasts with transcripts, helps students build vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Discussing what they are reading and asking questions about characters, themes or opinions can also help students develop confidence in expressing ideas.
Parents and carers can also support writing development by encouraging students to write regularly in everyday contexts. Journalling, reviewing a film, summarising an article or discussing how to structure a response can all help reinforce the skills students are learning in class.
Creating a quiet study space, helping students establish a reading routine and showing interest in their learning can make a significant difference to their progress and confidence.
