Interschool Chess Tournament vs Box Hill High School

Blackburn High School students showcased their chess prowess on Friday, 8 December 2023, at the first interschool chess competition held at Box Hill High School.

The students boldly chanted the club’s motto: 'See a good move, think of a better one,' as they faced off against their opponents. Yonathan Ozernov’s passion for chess stole the show as he and the team gave Box Hill’s champions a run for their money during the Puzzle round.

Awards were presented to players from both schools, with Yonathan Ozernov claiming the first place, followed by Joseph Kim and Dane Wilson securing 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in the tournament.

The effort displayed by all students must be recognised, as their cheers and chants on the day lifted the spirits of all players.

The Swiss-style tournament further complemented the spirit, providing everyone with multiple opportunities to learn from each other without a single bad result terminating participation.

The day ended on a positive note as players from both schools pledged to celebrate this day with each other again next year and to grow the community further by including schools from the area. Kudos to all our chess gurus!

A big thank you to Box Hill High School for the opportunity to start something new and exciting by joining our two schools together and for the lovely certificates and treats that each student received.
