SLAM POETRY- English Competition

8DA vs 8HB

On Thursday 2nd November Ms Healy’s 8HB class challenged Ms Kourelis’ 8DA class to a SLAM Poetry Competition.

Ms Healy set the mood with a rendition of her own inspirational poem, dedicated to the young students in our respective classes. Then the main event commenced. Each participant was welcomed with a chant of 3-2-1-SLAM.

We enjoyed a variety of approaches and themes, which included the themes of nature, war, football, positive thinking, climate change, urbanisation and valuing oneself. Students incorporated a range of poetic devices learned over the unit such as rhyme, rhythm, gesture, assonance, alliteration and onomatopoeia.

And the winners were…

In first place, Elizabeth M (8HB), in second place Yasmine S (8HB) and in third place was the combined talents of Curtis R, Hayata M, Navon R, and Sam O (8DA).

All year 8 classes have been studying and experimenting with SLAM Poetry over the past weeks. Congratulations to students and teachers!
