HAP - Maths Games Day

HAP - High Achievers Program - Joined with Box Hill High School

This term a selection of high ability students participated in the Maths Games Day run by the Maths Association of Victoria.

The Maths Games Day is a day of math-based challenges and puzzles, designed to engage students in creative mathematical thinking and problem-solving. The day ran as an interschool competition against Box Hill High School and East Doncaster Secondary College. Year 7 and 9 students attended game days at Box Hill High School, while Blackburn High School hosted the day for Year 8 students.

The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with students finding the day challenging, interesting, and fun!

Maths Games Day was a day filled with games and other maths-related things to do, which was run by the Maths Association of Victoria, and a man named Andrew leading the day. For the year 8s, it was hosted at Blackburn, with year 8s at Box Hill High School coming over and joining us. We split into groups mixed up with Box Hill, and played various challenging games and puzzles, some being new, and others being familiar, with a couple of twists on them. For example, one of the things we did was a 12-piece puzzle, where you had 12 pieces of varying sizes and lengths, and you had to fit them all into a 10x10 grid. This sounds easy, but the pieces couldn’t touch each other directly. The closest they could touch was with corners, but they couldn’t be directly next to each other. This challenge was probably the most difficult, and only one group managed to fit all 12 pieces into the grid successfully. Overall, the games were fun, while providing a difficult challenge, truly challenging our thoughts and ideas while still being interesting.
