Year 12 Biology Students Explore the Science Behind Everyday Germ Fighters
Our Year 12 VCE Biology students recently enjoyed a hands-on practical investigation that brought classroom science to life. Working as microbiologists, they explored how effective a range of common household antiseptics and disinfectants are at preventing the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Using professional laboratory techniques, students cultured bacteria on agar plates and measured the zones of inhibition to determine which products were most successful at stopping bacterial growth.
The results sparked plenty of discussion. Of the disinfectants tested, Milton proved to be the most effective, outperforming Pine O Cleen and Spray & Wipe. Among the antiseptics, Dettol produced the strongest results, ahead of Betadine and Listerine.
More importantly, this investigation gave students the opportunity to experience authentic scientific inquiry. They developed practical laboratory skills, analysed real experimental data, and learned how similar testing methods are used in hospitals and research laboratories to help identify effective treatments for bacterial infections.
It was wonderful to see our students collaborating, thinking critically, and applying their biological knowledge to a real-world context. Experiences like these not only strengthen scientific understanding but also inspire curiosity and confidence as our students continue their VCE journey.
