Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to plan and put a proposal in for an upcoming fundraiser in support of Beyond Blue, and I couldn't be prouder of the commitment, teamwork and leadership they have shown throughout the planning process.

Our SRC plan to support Beyond Blue and the vital work they do in raising awareness of mental health, reducing stigma and providing support to Australians experiencing anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges.

It has been fantastic to see our student leaders taking ownership of this initiative and working collaboratively to make a positive difference. Their enthusiasm and desire to give back to the community is something they should all be incredibly proud of.

There have also been many exciting things happening across the College, so please keep reading to see what the students have been up to 😊

Ash Bishop (Junior School Engagement and Wellbeing Leader)

During this term the year 7 classes have been exploring many different subjects such as English, mathematics, humanities, metalwork, textiles, languages, science, music, woodwork and more. To start off the term in woodwork the year 7s have started making their slide top boxes and have learnt how to use tools like the disk sander. During connect lessons the year 7’s have been learning about new ideas to help improve the school, or what the school will look like in the future. This is a great way to let our imaginations loose so we can help improve the school. But connect lessons aren’t the only special event that has been happening! A schoolwide dodgeball tournament has recently taken place where the year 7’s competed in. Sadly, the year 7’s did not emerge victorious and we lost to the year 8s, but it was a very fun and exciting event to hype students for future events. In drama the students have worked on the 4 expressive skills of Gesture, Movement, Facial expression and Voice, they have also done work on mime and started working on fairytales. In visual arts the students have been working on tone and pattern, their project for pattern is ‘bad fur day’ where the students get an image of an animal, trace it then cover it in different patterns. In metalwork year 7’s has learnt to construct a metal-flip-top-box and how to use tools and the safety hazards that must be learnt. In music year 7’s have learnt about the theory of music such as the structure of a pop song and the abbreviations for different volumes of notes.

This term has gotten off to a great start. At the moment us year eights are doing our subject selections for next year. There are so many options to choose, in total there is 23 subjects on offer. This has really made us think about what we want to do. Entries close on Sunday so make sure to get them in by then. We are also looking forward to our medieval day incursion which is super exciting and ties in well with our history unit in Humanities. We will get to learn and live what it was like back in the Medieval Ages. Some of the year eights have been working really hard for the Music Festival being held on September 12th and 13th at the Barcham theatre, so make sure to buy tickets when they’re on sale so you can come and watch. Camp is coming up quickly and we are excited for it. The summit is such a good camp and will be such a great experience for us. It has so many great activities and will be really fun for the lucky people who get to go. There is only 100 spots so make sure to everything quickly to ensure your spot on the year eight summit camp. There was also a dodgeball tournament that took place and the year eights beat the year sevens (cause we’re just so much better!!!!)

Zara P (Year 8 Mentor Representative)

The Year 9 students' RAID program was ready once the first semester holidays came to a close. Throughout the term, students took part in either a Melbourne laneways tour or an MCG tour, with groups swapping activities if they had completed the other in the previous term. The laneways tour led students through Melbourne's backstreets, giving them a real feel for exploring the city, discovering cafés, restaurants, and vibrant street art. Students also visited the Block Arcade and learned about its history dating back to 1891. Overall, the tour was a great success, helping Year 9 students build confidence navigating Melbourne and identifying places they may wish to revisit.

Meanwhile, the other group explored the MCG, getting up close to the famous playing surface and visiting the library, which houses extensive cricket, AFL, and Olympic Games history. Students also saw the Long Room and learned about the ground's rich history before enjoying the interactive Game On gallery.

Two weeks later, students visited the Docklands ice skating rink. After a safety briefing and skills demonstration, they spent 90 minutes on the ice. While many started shakily, they quickly gained confidence, making the excursion a fun experience that encouraged teamwork and perseverance.

The final RAID activity was Careers Day, where students met with teachers to discuss Year 10 subject selections and receive advice. It is hoped students left feeling more confident about their choices.

Isaac H (Year 9 RAID Captain)

The Year 10s have had a fantastic start to Semester 2! We all have started new subjects for the semester at the end of term 2, a small group from year 9-12 went to Japan for approximately 2 weeks learning about the culture. In English, we had completed our article analysis SAC and have begun studying Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which we’ll soon see live on stage at the PAC. Looking ahead to next Monday, a group of Year 10 students is heading off to the annual ski camp with Mr. Woodlock and Ms. Sparrow. Additionally, on Tuesday, August 4th, we also participated in course counselling to start planning their subject pathways for Years 11 and 12 including VET, VM, and VCE.

Maya M (Year 10 SRC Member)

In the past weeks of Year 11, we have started a driving program in our Connect periods to help improve our road knowledge and skills, as everyone starts navigating the busy Victorian roads for the first time. It assists in learning road rules and staying calm in certain situations, and transfers to day-to-day life problem solving skills. The Sociology and Legal Studies students also went on an excursion to Pentridge Prison and the police museum in Melbourne of the 15th of July to further their understanding of crime and deviance. The VET Dance students had a mock dance audition in Prahran for an assessment on audition understanding and skills on the 21st of July. The Drama students have an upcoming excursion to see a play of Animal Farm by George Orwell on the 17th of August. The Environmental Science students have gone down to the Jackson’s Creek for water samples for practical experiments, and the Psychology students recently ate Miracle Berries to test their papillas and how their taste system works
