Maths
Over the next two weeks, students will explore how to use the distributive property to multiply by one-digit numbers and apply factors to solve multiplication equations. They will also investigate the area and perimeter of both regular and irregular shapes.
Students will engage in Rich Tasks that allow them to apply their understanding of these concepts in meaningful and practical ways. A strong focus for our Grade 5 students throughout the year will be developing times table fluency. We are currently focusing on mastering the 2, 3, 5, and 10 times tables.
Building strong multiplication fact knowledge is essential, as proficiency with times tables supports success in many future mathematics concepts.
Literacy
Our Reading unit will focus on the text Waves. Students will explore various experiences of migration to Australia and investigate the need to be flexible, how characters respond to challenges and how positive attitudes can turn a problem into an opportunity.
Spelling Mastery is now under way with students learning morphographs, when to double the last letter in a word and when to drop the final e in a word. They should be able to recite these spelling rules to you.
Wellbeing
March 20th is Harmony Day, a day dedicated to celebrating cultural diversity, inclusivity, and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone. It promotes respect, unity, and the message that "Everyone Belongs", often marked by community events and wearing the colour orange. Students will participate in activities relating to and exploring the above.
Inquiry
Students will undertake a core knowledge unit, World lakes. During this unit they will explore the resources and benefits provided by various lakes across the world.
