Connect: Year 2

Hello Grade 2 Families,

Can you believe we only have TWO WEEKS left of Term 1?! The days and weeks are flying by and we are amazed at how much content we have covered and the way the students have approached their learning!!!! Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in their learning journey! A couple of quick things...

  1. There has been a range of illnesses circulating recently, which has meant a few staff absences across the Grade 2 team. We sincerely thank you for your understanding and support during this time. Please be reassured that our team works very closely together, and all teachers are familiar with the Grade 2 cohort, ensuring continuity of learning and care for every student.
  2. If you have not already sent your child's navy-blue reading satchel into school, could you please endeavour to do so ASAP? If it is lost, could you let us know so we can make alternative arrangements? Thanks!

Enjoy your weekend,

Hailee, Dave, Emma and Andrew

Reminders

* Learning starts promptly in the morning. Please remember to take/remind your child to use the toilet before the 8.45am bell so nothing important is missed.

* If your child can't tie their shoelaces, could this please be a focus at home to ensure their safety when walking around in the yard at recess and lunch times.

* Please be mindful that mornings are a time filled with lesson prepping, staff collaboration and preparation for the day. We are always happy to schedule meetings with parents and guardians on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, alternatively feel free to email us with any questions, comments or concerns.

Upcoming Learning

Literacy

  • In phonics, we will continue our Stage 7.4 Review, deepening knowledge of prior learning and expanding ability to read multi-syllabic words. We will also be working on our comprehension by partner reading our fluency text, Slime Time, and answering questions. Check out the video below on how to support reading at home using our decodable readers.
  • Uluru was thoroughly enjoyed by the Grade 2 Cohort and whilst it was short, students learnt so many interesting facts. Our next unit, The Gentle Genius of Trees launched this week.  This text explores the following key themes, topics and/or content:

    - How trees live, grow, connect, and support life on Earth.

    - How trees grow and survive, including the process of photosynthesis to generate a food source.

    - How trees communicate underground and through the air.

    - How trees share food, water, and information with one another.

    - How forests function like a community or family.

    - Why trees are important for the planet's health (oxygen, habitats, stability).

Students will be using this knowledge to plan and write informative paragraphs with a focus on topic sentence, supporting details and a concluding sentence.

Numeracy

  • Students are continuing to practise using their Maths grid books to lay out their work in a neat and tidy manner.
  • Revising content learnt during quick Daily Review Maths sessions
  • We have started our second Place Value unit where the focus is on exploring both three- and four-digit numbers. Students will continue developing their ability to partition numbers in standard and non-standard form, as well as placing them on number lines, ordering and comparing and rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds. Check out this 'greater than, less than' video!
