2026 STAWA Solar Car Challenge

Mazenod College Competes in 2026 STAWA Solar Car Challenge Sponsored by Synergy

Mazenod College’s Year 8 students, Lewis B, Oliver D, Alejandro F and Jackson S, competed in the 2026 STAWA Solar Car Challenge on Tuesday, 24 March. The event, hosted by the Science Teachers’ Association of Western Australia (STAWA) at Southern River College, was sponsored by Synergy and brought together 20 schools from across the Southern Metro Area to showcase innovation, teamwork and sustainability in action.

The challenge required students to design, build and race model solar-powered cars, testing their engineering prowess and problem-solving skills. Our team demonstrated remarkable creativity and resilience, fine-tuning their vehicle to maximise efficiency and speed. Despite this, they did not qualify for the grand final due to technical issues with their car.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Bradstreet for organising our entry into the competition, and to all the Year 8 Science teachers - Mr Massey, Mr Connolly-Brown, Mrs Price and Mr Tuohy - who guided and supported all the Year 8 students throughout this journey. A massive thank you to Mrs Price and Mr Connolly-Brown for accompanying our team and a six-student cheer squad to Southern River College.

A huge congratulations to our students for their hard work and determination on race day. Mazenod College continues to push the boundaries of STEM education, and we look forward to seeing what our talented students achieve next.
