The Strength of Our Community
As we reach the end of Term 1, I find myself reflecting on my first months as Principal of Mazenod College. Beginning this role has been both a privilege and a profound learning experience. I’ve experienced the strength of a community shaped by strong and real relationships, shared values, and a deep commitment to the formation and care of young men. I am grateful for the generous warmth, encouragement, gratitude and trust that students, staff and families have extended to me during this first term. Your welcome of me has been humbling.
Term One is always an intense time. New routines, new expectations and new challenges have come thick and fast. Yet what has struck me most strongly has been the way this community responds when faced with both opportunity and adversity. This has been especially evident in the deep, compassionate and dignified manner in which we supported one another following our tragic loss of Mark. The care, respect and courage shown by our students and staff spoke powerfully about the strength of this community. I would like to particularly acknowledge our Year 12 students, whose leadership and love during this time was inspirational, and made me immensely proud.
I would also like to sincerely thank our parents and families for the support you have shown the College this term. Your trust, partnership and willingness to work alongside us has been deeply appreciated, particularly during moments that have challenged our community. The encouragement you provide at home, your engagement with the life of the College, and your confidence in our shared expectations all play a vital role in the growth and wellbeing of our young men. Mazenod is strongest when school and families work together, and I am grateful for the respectful and supportive relationships that have been so evident throughout the term.
Across the College, there have been many positive achievements. In classrooms, on camps, in sporting teams, and through service to others, students have demonstrated that learning and growth come through persistence, discipline and a willingness to keep going when things are challenging. These successes are never achieved in isolation; they are the result of shared effort, with students applying themselves and staff committing daily to guidance, care and high-quality learning.
As a Catholic College in the Oblate tradition, this shared responsibility takes on deeper meaning as we enter the Easter season. Easter invites us to reflect on sacrifice, hope and renewal. It reminds us of growth that often comes through challenge, and that new life is made possible through acts of self‑giving. Inspired by St Eugene de Mazenod, we are called to look beyond ourselves, to notice those in need, and to respond with compassion, humility, and service.
This commitment is also reflected in the standards we uphold at Mazenod. Standards are not about control; they are about care. High expectations around behaviour, uniform, punctuality, and respect exist to ensure that every student feels safe, valued, and able to flourish. From my first address this year, I have been clear that these expectations are non‑negotiable when it comes to safety and wellbeing, and central to forming young men who raise one another up, and can be trusted to do what is right, even when it is hard.
As we move into the holiday break and the Easter season, I encourage families and students to take time to rest, reflect and reconnect with what truly matters. Renewal is always possible and we return stronger when we take responsibility for ourselves and for one another.
Thank you for the countless Moments of Grace. I wish you all a safe and restful break and a happy and holy Easter. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 2, renewed in purpose and confident in being united as the strong Mazenod community we are.
‘Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God’
God Bless. Our community remains always in my prayers.
