Careers News – Week 10, Term 1 2026

As we come to the end of Term 1, it has been a highly productive period in Careers Education, with students across Years 10–12 engaging in a range of activities designed to support their understanding of future pathways and post-school opportunities.


Year 10 – Head of Learning Area Presentations

In Week 10, Year 10 students began their Head of Learning Area presentations, an important step in preparing for subject selection later this year.

 

Students heard from:

• Mr Rasano (Head of Science)

• Mr Voakes (Head of Religious Education)

 

These presentations provided students with valuable information about:

• Subjects available in Year 11 (2027)

• Course structure and expectations

• Prerequisites required for different pathways

• How subject choices link to future university and career options

 

These presentations will continue into Term 2, leading into MyPath Week (Week 9) and Subject Selection Meetings in Week 10, where students will finalise their subject choices.


Choosing Subjects for Year 11 & 12 – Curtin Year 10 Guide

Curtin University has released its Year 10 Guide, which is a valuable resource for students beginning to think about subject selection and future pathways.

 

The guide includes:

• A Find U Quiz to help students explore areas of interest

• Information about different pathway options

• Overview of Curtin University and its courses

• Course information and entry requirements

• Support services available to students

 

This is an excellent resource for students and families as they begin preparing for subject selection and considering future university pathways.

Year 11 – Pathway Planning and Industry Insights

In Week 9, Year 11 students participated in pathway-specific presentations.

Students on a university pathway attended a session presented by Mr Tuohy, which focused on:

 

• How ATAR is calculated

• Early offer pathways and what universities are looking for

• Course prerequisites for different university degrees

• Alternative pathways into university

 

Students in the General/VET pathway attended a presentation from Barry Upton (Mining Club WA), exploring career opportunities within the mining industry.


Year 12 – Pathway Planning and Preparation for Applications

Term 1 has been an important foundation period for Year 12 students.

 

Students have:

• Attended their first Careers presentation outlining university pathways, early offers, TISC applications and key timelines

• Begun individual career counselling and pathway planning sessions

• Explored course options through university tools such as course visualisers

• Received information about competitive pathways such as Medicine

 

Many students have been asking about early offers and the TISC application process, which will be a key focus moving into Term 2.

 

Representatives from TISC will be visiting Mazenod early in Term 2 to explain the application process and how to structure course preferences.


Looking Ahead – Term 2

Term 2 will be a key period for Careers Education.

 

Planned activities include:

• TISC presentation on university applications and preferences

• Continued individual pathway planning meetings

• Workplace Learning (WPL) opportunities for General students in Year 11 and Year 12

• Ongoing Head of Learning Area presentations (Year 10)

• MyPath Week (Week 9) and Subject Selection Meetings (Week 10)


Important Reminder – University Open Days

Students and families are strongly encouraged to attend upcoming university Open Days.

 

Upcoming dates:

• ECU (Southwest Bunbury) – 3 May 2026

• ECU City Campus – 9 August 2026

• Notre Dame – 2 May 2026

• Curtin University – Postponed until further notice

• Murdoch University – 23 May

 

Open Days provide an excellent opportunity to explore campuses, speak with staff and students, and gain a better understanding of courses and career pathways.


Upcoming Event – Perth Careers Expo 2026

14 – 17 May at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre

 

The Careers Expo is a valuable opportunity for students to explore future pathways, speak with universities, training providers and industry representatives.

 

Students who are unable to attend with the school are encouraged to visit the Expo with their families over the weekend.

Opportunities – Australian Federal Police (AFP)

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) will be attending the Careers Expo and offering online information sessions for students interested in careers in law enforcement.

 

Students interested in law, policing and national security may wish to explore this pathway.

• Free training and development

• A wide range of career pathways

Scholarship Opportunity – Fogarty Foundation (UWA)

Applications close: 5 May 2026

 

The Fogarty Foundation Scholarship is a prestigious opportunity for high-achieving students intending to study at UWA university.

 

A Fogarty Scholar is a student who has demonstrated high achievement relative to opportunity through academic success, co-curricular involvement and personal achievement.

Opportunities – WAAPA Short Courses 2026

ECU WAAPA has announced a range of short courses and workshops for students interested in performing arts and music, with many beginning from May.

 

These workshops provide excellent opportunities for students to develop their skills and explore pathways into the creative industries.


Career Spotlight – Business and Commerce Pathways

Business and Commerce pathways lead to a wide range of careers across many industries.

 

Students can study:

• Bachelor of Commerce

• Bachelor of Business

• Economics

• Finance and Accounting

 

These pathways can lead to careers such as:

• Financial analyst or stockbroker

• Accountant

• Marketing or business development manager

• Economist

 

Students are encouraged to explore these options through university Open Days and Careers counselling.


Career Tools Reminder

All students have access to Career Tools, which provides information on careers, university courses, and pathway planning.

 

Students are encouraged to continue using Career Tools over the holidays.
