Foundation Students Create Colourful Owl Collages!

Our Foundation artists have been busy exploring the exciting art medium of collage, discovering how simple pieces of coloured paper can be transformed into amazing works of art!

To begin our lesson, we took a closer look at one of nature's most fascinating birds—the owl. Together, we investigated the features of an owl and discussed why it has such large eyes and a sharp beak. The students discovered that owls are nocturnal, meaning they hunt at night, so their large eyes help them see in the dark and spot prey from long distances. We also learned that their strong, sharp beaks are perfectly designed for catching and eating their food.

Inspired by these incredible birds, the students created their own vibrant owl collages by tearing colourful triangular pieces of paper and carefully overlapping them to cover an A3 sheet. This technique helped create beautiful layers, textures, and patterns that made every owl unique.

Once their collage backgrounds were complete, the students followed step-by-step instructions to draw their owl's large, expressive eyes and sharp beak using colourful pastels. After carefully cutting out these features, they glued them onto their collages, bringing their magnificent owls to life!

The classroom was filled with colourful feathers, creative designs, and plenty of smiling faces. We are so proud of our Foundation artists for developing their tearing, layering, and pasting skills while learning fascinating facts about one of Australia's most remarkable nocturnal birds.
