Year 1 News

It was another busy one in Year 1, filled with wonderful learning and lots of enthusiasm. We have been hard at work, continuing to build our knowledge, skills, curiosity and confidence.

As writers, we have been learning about Information Texts and unpacking their structure and features. As researchers, we have used different sources, such as videos, posters, diagrams and non-fiction texts, to gather information about different animals and living things. This week, we wrote interesting information reports using facts that we learnt about Cheetahs. We made sure to include a General Statement, Description and Evaluation, as well as lots of topic-specific vocabulary. Check out some of our writing below!

As mathematicians, we continued to build our knowledge of patterns and made connections to skip counting. We have been learning to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s, to 120 and back. As thinkers, we looked for the patterns and identified the rule. For example, adding 2 each time, adding 5 each time and adding 10 each time. We also noticed that when we count by 5s, it follows an A, B, A, B pattern. We noticed how digits change, and when we get to 100, the count starts again, especially when we count by 10s. We had so much fun exploring this through Rocket Counting and Skip Counting Races!

Please note: By the end of Year 1, the Victorian Curriculum expects students to be able to:

  • Count forwards from 0 to 120 (and start at different numbers)
  • Count backwards from 120 to 0 (and start at different numbers)
  • Skip count forwards by 2s, 5s and 10s from 0 to 120, and identify the pattern/rule
  • Skip count backwards by 2s, 5s and 10s from 120 to 0, and identify the pattern/rule

Please continue to support your child with their counting each evening to help consolidate what we are learning at school. Every little bit of practice makes a big difference!
